| CLAN Organsises Charity Walk for Mothers Day |
|
(March 2010) A charity walk founded by a North-east mother who lost her son to cancer has paved the way for a new Mother’s Day event in Aberdeen. Marjory Nicholson’s son Andy died three years ago on Mothers Day. Last year Marjory, from Macduff, decided to turn the day into something positive by organising a Mothers Day walk in her home town. The walk raised more than £6,500 for North-east cancer support charity CLAN and was the catalyst for Marjory raising more than £20,000 for the organisation. In recognition of people who have lost a son or daughter, CLAN has taken inspiration from Marjory’s event and is organising its first Mother’s Day sponsored walk on Sunday 14 March at Duthie Park. The event, which begins at 10am is open to all ages and abilities and follows a 1km circular route around the park which can be lapped as many times as participants choose. Marjory will be holding her walk on Mother’s Day as an annual event in Macduff. This year’s walk will begin at 9.30am on Sunday 14 March at the Fish Market in Macduff and will follow a three-mile circular route known locally as “Roon the Howe.” Further details are available by contacting Marjory on 01261 833778. Marjory said: “I am delighted that, through the inspiration of my son Andy, CLAN will benefit from its own Mother’s Day sponsored walk in Duthie Park. My husband Charlie and grand-daughter Xenia will attend, while myself and my daughter Claire will be at the Macduff walk where everyone is welcome, particularly those who have lost offspring. “The services of CLAN eased a lot of problems for the Nicholson family and we will always be indebted to them.” Susan Crighton, fundraising manager at CLAN said: “After meeting with Marjory last year and hearing about the walk, we were inspired by her determination and decided it was a great opportunity to offer to others who have lost loved ones. “Whether someone has lost a son, daughter, or mother, CLAN recognises that Mothers Day is a significant day for many. The Mothers Day sponsored walk will give people the chance to get together and remember their loved ones in a special way.” The Duthie Park walk will start at 10am and continue until midday. The cost of entering the walk is £5 per adult – children walk for free. Anyone who would like to take part can contact Duncan Charles, CLAN Fundraising Co-ordinator on 01224 647000 for registration. Sponsor forms will be issued to participants on receipt of registration forms. |
